Intrigued by the Dirty Kanza 200? The Chino Grinder? Or simply the lure of crushed granite along the canals and dirt roads? Recall growing up on rural roads? You aren’t alone. Gravel riding excitement has exploded in popularity as riders find the fun in rolling down unpaved surface roads while watching the country/desert-side as you float by.

GRAVEL ….is fun….is exploration….is no cars….is where you ride

What’s to love? “Freedom to ride anywhere and everywhere”, says Russell Cox of Fountain Hills Bikes. “The bike travels on gravel, trails, road, and all of the above.” That allows a rider to take one bike anywhere for any purpose. Russell is a veteran of both those classic rides mentioned in our opening paragraph.  When not training for distance rides, you’ll find him commuting to FHB on his Crux which he’s set up as a gravel bike.

According to Bicycling‘s Gravel Biking Guide 2019 “Gravel has soared in popularity largely because of a perfect storm of evolving bicycle technology and the changing landscape of the sport.” Even in an area as populated as the Phoenix Valley, one can find solitude from car traffic on unpaved roads, singletrack dirt or bike-packing into the unknown. The result can be a more relaxed and enjoyable ride, safe from worries about distracted drivers.  Gravel can be more fun and faster than mountain biking, and the new bikes are built for greater stability and comfort than a cross bike.

The key to unlocking this freedom adventure starts with the Specialized Diverge. It’s a bike built for comfort, confidence and capability. It’s Future Shock soaks up the bumps. The geometry is a “road version of a modern trail bike”. The Diverge has maximum tire clearance – up to 44mm tire capacity. And Shimano’s Ultegra 11-speed grouping allow for “playful handling and predictable steering” as you flow along the terrain. The bike performs equally well on both dirt and paved roads.

There’s plenty of room for multiple water bottles, mounts for racks and fenders, bags to haul your stuff – it’s your perfect bike-packing buddy for long days on the saddle.

We have a line of Diverge bikes waiting for you to rent or purchase. Try one out for a half day or more. We think you’ll want to dive in and add one to your fleet. We’ll help you find the size and style to suit your need. And we’ll apply up to one day rental towards your purchase. See you soon!
